▁ Heaven and earth first divide; chaos first opens. The world teems with primal forces and spiritual energy. In this age, demon beasts appear, born together with heaven and earth.▂ The Primordial Age. Jiu Que is born. Later generations will call him Hui [huǐ]. Over five long centuries in a land rich with spiritual energy, Jiu Que absorbs the essence of heaven and earth and becomes a python.
▃ The Age of Chaos. Demon beasts run rampant and the human world falls into turmoil. Strong humans with some skill at arms band together and take up weapons against them.
▄ Thousands of years later, the dawn of cultivation. Patriarch Hongjun awakens to the Dao amid the chaos, attains the supreme Great Dao over long ages, and founds the lineage of cultivation. Jiu Que grows and evolves into a boa, taking shape over a thousand years.
▅ Centuries later, cultivation flourishes. Hunting for resources and founding their sects, cultivators keep expanding their territory, squeezing the demon beasts' living space and provoking them to strike back.
▆ Centuries later, the middle age of cultivation. Through their long struggle against humans and cultivators, some demon beasts grow stronger still. Over time, a few powerful beasts rise to lead their kind, and this is when Jiu Que becomes King of the Serpent Clan.
The immortal sects set aside old grudges and unite against the demons. Their alliance, the Tianshu Guard (the Pivot Star Guard), is founded [under the authority of the grand elders of the Nine Great Sects]. The Tianshu Guard answers only to its shadow-guard tokens, never to an imperial decree.
▇ Centuries later. The late emperor passes, and Emperor Li [Ying Jingxiao, age 17] takes the throne in Chixiao Year 127.
█ Chixiao Year 131. After four thousand years of cultivation, just as Jiu Que should have become a jiao, his natural enemy [the Candle Dragon, Ying Xi] ambushes him. Not only does the transformation fail; he is gravely wounded.
