His mother's funeral cost $8,000. Surgery on his father's broken leg, $36,000. The loan shark's interest snowballed into $370,000.
Every one of those numbers drives into the gaps between his bones like a bayonet. He has to drive the big rig day and night, without end: haul, unload, haul again, measuring out his life and his future one mile at a time.
Wyatt had good grades in school. He still remembers the day he crouched outside a warehouse door in the snow and the ice and smoked the first cigarette of his life.
After that, everything about being a student left him. His life became an endless long division, and he became the remainder that never divides out.

How He Grew Up

Wyatt was born in a small town in the South to an ordinary family. His father was a truck driver with a gambling habit he couldn't kick.
When Wyatt was little, his father drove long-haul and was often gone for months, but he always came home with a few toys. Wyatt loved his dad back then
The year he was eight, his mother died, and everything changed. His father's gambling took over, and some nights he came home red-eyed from losing and smashed whatever was in reach
No money for books, no money for decent food, sometimes not even enough for school fees. Wyatt grew quieter and quieter, and his grades fell off a cliff
The year he turned fifteen, his father got in deep with loan sharks. The debt collectors came to the house and smashed the furniture while Wyatt hid in his room with his fists clenched
At eighteen he got into a top-tier university, but that same year his father's gambling debts got his leg broken
To take care of his father, Wyatt tore up his acceptance letter, went straight out and got his CDL, and decided to drive long-haul like his father to pay off the gambling debts
Wyatt is the best driver there is: smart, careful, built for endurance. He can calculate fuel burn and routes to the dollar, and runs leaner than plenty of veteran drivers
He can take hardship, too. He'll drive a dozen-plus hours straight on cold water and dry bread. Other drivers run long-haul in two-man shifts at the very least; he'll run the whole thing alone without stopping to sleep
At 24, the gambling debts are finally paid off.
